Project
The term competence refers to a person’s actual abilities and knowledge, i.e., all the skills, expertise and ways of thinking that a person has acquired in the course of his or her life and which are at their command. By implication, the term therefore also includes individual capability, aptitude and potential. The Grundtvig 2 project "Methods of identifying formally and informally acquired competences" is a learning partnership, running from 1 August 2004 to 31 July 2007, in which, over the course of three years, national and institutional practice and experience and the theoretical and political educational contexts for the identification, evaluation and appreciation of competences are considered.

Six organisations from five countries are participating in the project.
There are three organisations from Germany and Austria: HeurekaNet – Verein zur Förderung Lernender Regionen e.V. (Ger; project coordinator), the Bildungswerk der Katholischen Arbeitnehmer Bewegung in the Diocese of Münster – branch Dülmen (Ger), and Burgenländische Volkshochschulen (A).

Recognising and capitalising on competences
In recent years, the notion of competence has set a new course for the discussion of adult education and for education policies. Particularly among experts from German-speaking countries, the notion of competence has been contrasted with notions of education and qualification as a standard for professionalisation. By putting the idea of competence first, the educational system has been turned toward the individual, his or her dispositions for self-organisation and his/her learning processes.
